The Supreme Court of Iran has rejected the request for retrial in the case of Mashallah Karami, the father of the late Mohammad Mehdi Karami, who is currently imprisoned in Karaj Central Detention Center.
Ali Sharifzadeh Ardakani, Karami's lawyer, shared this update, stating: "Unfortunately, the Supreme Court has not accepted Mashallah Karami's retrial request. I will prepare a new retrial application with updated arguments and submit it to the Supreme Court once again."
Previously, a retrial request had been submitted to the Supreme Court for this case.
Mashallah Karami, the father of Mohammad Mehdi (Kumar) Karami, an executed protester, was arrested by security forces on August 22, 2023. During his arrest, the authorities confiscated all electronic devices and froze the family's bank accounts.
On October 28, 2023, he was transferred from the Ministry of Intelligence's detention facility to Karaj Central Detention Center. After three months in solitary confinement, he was moved to Ward 15 of the detention center.
In a ruling issued on May 20, 2024, the Karaj Revolutionary Court sentenced Mashallah Karami to five years of imprisonment for "collusion and assembly to commit crimes against national security" and one year for "propaganda against the regime."
This sentence was later reduced by the Alborz Province Appeals Court in September 2024 to three years and seven months for "collusion and assembly" and eight months for "propaganda against the regime."
Additionally, in a separate case in the Summer of 2024, Mashallah Karami was sentenced by Branch 102 of the Nazarabad Criminal Court to eight years and ten months of imprisonment, along with a fine of 1.9 billion tomans and the confiscation of his assets, on charges of "money laundering and acquiring illicit wealth."
