The Supreme Court has rejected the retrial request of Mehrdad Bakhtiari, a pro-Monarchist political prisoner held in Karaj Central Prison, and the uncle of Pouya Bakhtiari, a November 2019 protest victim.
Mehrdad Bakhtiari was arrested on July 11, 2022, by security forces after releasing a video about the detention of Nahid Shirpisheh, Poya Bakhtiari's mother, and sharing images of her home’s broken lock. He was transferred to Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj but was released on bail on September 3 of the same year.
In early February 2023, the Karaj Revolutionary Court sentenced him to one year in prison for “propaganda against the regime” and five years for “assembly and collusion against national security.” The sentence also included a two-year travel ban and two years of exile in Shahr-e Kord. On August 7, 2024, he was arrested again to serve his sentence and transferred to Ward 15 of Karaj Central Prison.
