Increasing trend of suicide among teenagers in Iran

During Summer, two teenage sisters, Elena and Elisa, died by suicide by jumping from the roof of a 19-story tower in Tehran. This incident, which occurred in the Shahid Beheshti Hakimiyeh residential area, once again highlighted the rising trend of suicides among adolescents in Iran. Initial investigations revealed that the sisters, residents of the building's ninth floor, had previously attempted suicide but were stopped by the building’s caretaker.

Following the tragedy, the parents accused two young men of abducting and murdering their daughters. However, judicial investigations and security camera footage confirmed that the men had only spent a few hours accompanying the girls on an outing before returning them home. The court ruled the deaths as suicides and dismissed the murder allegations. However, both men were sentenced to 99 lashes and one year of exile to remote, harsh locations for engaging in extramarital relations with the sisters.

The rising suicide rates in Iran, particularly among teenagers, are not only a serious warning for society but also a stark indicator of the government's failure to provide a safe and hopeful environment for the younger generation. Poverty, social pressures, cultural restrictions, and the lack of essential education on psychological and social issues all contribute to this alarming trend.

In such circumstances, a government tasked with ensuring the well-being and tranquility of its citizens not only falls short of its responsibilities but exacerbates the crisis with oppressive policies and inhumane responses. Instead of addressing root causes and fostering solutions, the state's actions further deepen societal despair and alienation, amplifying the underlying challenges.
